Hearing & Vision Screening in the Workplace

 

Hearing and vision screening are two fundamental strategies for optimizing employee health.

The purpose of screening is early diagnosis and treatment of the individual.

Hearing and Vision screening can contribute significantly to the success of worksite health and safety programs.

Hearing Loss ranks among the top five causes of years lived with a disablity

 

  • Among the 8.2 million adults with audiometrically measured hearing loss, the majority (77% or 6.3 million) had unperceived hearing loss.

  • An estimated 54% aged 40 - 79 had at least mild hearing loss in high-frequency range.

  • Men (63%)were more likely than women (46%) to have hearing loss.

  • 93% of older adults 70 to 79yrs had hearing loss

  • 38% of adults aged 40-59 yrs had hearing loss.

Health & Safety Awareness 

 

The overall goal of any health and safety program is to create the ultimate safe working enviroment and to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries and fatalities on the job.

Preventative Health Awareness is one of the tools available to the employer to help accomplish these goals.

The importance of Hearing and Vision Screening 

 

Annual hearing screening provides important informaton about the effectiveness of an employer's hearing conservation program. By monitoring workers hearing,  employers can make changes to their noise control and hearing conservation program to help prevent hearing loss.

Some Causes of Hearing Loss

 

  • Age-related hearing loss 

  • Injury caused by loud noises

  • Certain viral or bacterial infections such as mumps, meningitis, 

  • Meniere's disease.

  • Middle ear infections.

  • Collection of fluid in the middle ear.

  • Blockage of the outer ear, most commonly by wax.

  • Perforated (pierced) eardrum, which can be caused by an untreated ear infection, head injury or a blow to the ear, from poking something in your ear or by an ear trauma caused by the inability to equalize your ears.
